Asus Realtek HD audio problem

I recently got a new pc with an Asus P5K motherboard, after reformatting it the built-in sound card was not working anymore.

This is how I fixed it:

  1. From control panel, add/remove, remove these 2 softwares if they are installed, “Realtek High Definition Audio Driver” and “High Definition Audio driver Package – KB888111″.
  2. Restart Windows
  3. Get the latest Realtek drivers from here.
  4. Install it, and reboot.
  5. Should be working now!

I think this should work on all Asus Motherboards that have a built-in HD Realtek Soundcard.

Hi, I also have just built a system round an ASUS H3A-HDMI Mobo and have not been able to get the audio to work, except from the Realtek 3D Demo in the Realtek driver program. I have tried a lot of reinstalls etc.. no luck. Can I be clear, are you suggesting NOT to have the KB888111 installed at all? I thought you needed the UAA HD file on your machine before installing the Realtek software. Also, did the drivers on your ASUS driver CD not work at all either? Cheers.

Yep I also removed KB888111, restarted and then installed the new driver. Give it a shot and let me know if it works out for you!

Get SP3 update(which is what caused my driver to stop working in the first place or installing the motherboard driver-take your pick. Then go to windows directory at: My Computer/local disk C/Windows/KB888111. Delete KB888111 and restart your computer. If this does not work try ASUS update at this point (if you have an ASUS MOBO. See if it has the HD update to install. If that does not work go to the ASUS Support site and search for the problem related to your motherboard. Some sequence of these steps worked for me on an ASUS M3A79-Deluxe MOBO. I make no guarantee.

PS: I believe SP3 automagically installs the driver on restart at which point it is recognized by the system.

This is very relevant for fixing

This problem is caused by a missing file in XP and has nothing to do with the hardware or the Realtek audio driver. Each time you boot XP it will detect new hardware and request you to instal the Microsoft UUA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio. To fix the problem you have to request the hotfix for KB888111.

Click the following link then click where it says View and request hotfix downloads at the top left of the article next to the tools icon.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888111/

Don’t bother reading the KB888111 article as that is not particularly helpful. It says that the hotfix is for XP SP1 and SP2 but it works fine with SP3.

When you have requested the hotfix you will be sent an email with a download link to download the hotfix. The hotfix is a self extracting cabinet so double click the file to unzip the contents. You need to enter a password and the password is in the email sent from Microsoft along with the hotfix attachment.

When you have extracted the contents of the hotfix you will see a number of folders. The folders are named according to different languages so if you want english you choose the folder named US.

Open the folder and inside is another folder named x86fre and inside that folder are four self extracting cabinets. Two of these are named kb888111sp1 and kb888111sp2. Choose the SP1 cabinet if your XP is SP1 and choose the SP2 cabinet if your XP is either SP2 or SP3.

Important – don’t double click the cabinet but unzip it instead as you are not installing the hotfix. You are simply extracting the files from the cabinet.

When you have extracted the contents of kb888111sp1 or kb888111sp2 you will see a folder named commonfiles and inside this folder are the files you need to instal the missing Microsoft UUA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio.

Reboot XP and when it detects new hardware it requests the system file HDAUDBUS and you should simply point to the commonfiles folder which contains the missing file. XP will instal the file and that is the problem fixed.

Follow these steps and it is quite easy to do.

I have an audio problem…called Asus. They thought the mother board might be grounded…not! The HD onboard sound card sounds like a record with a scratch every time any audio sound is played….any ideas????

  17. MattE says:

Thanks a million!!! Was messing around with my realtek settings and suddenly had no sound. I could see sound levels, but nothing was coming out of speakers even though I had changed nothing with my hardware. No matter what I did or clicked on, nothing changed, until I uninstalled and reinstalled the driver like you said.
